What the Genuine Watch Is
A. Lange & Söhne launched the Datograph in 1999 as reference 403.035. The case measures 39 mm. Caliber L951.1 is manual wind and holds about 405 parts. It uses a column wheel, a flyback function, and a minute counter that jumps one step at a time. An outsize date sits at 12 o'clock. Two subdials carry the chronograph minutes and the running seconds.
Lange added the Datograph Up/Down in 2012, reference 405.035, at 41 mm. Caliber L951.6 raised the power reserve to 60 hours and added an indicator on the dial. The Datograph Perpetual came in 2006. Cases come in platinum, rose gold, and white gold.
Movements Inside Replicas
- Seagull ST19: a Chinese manual-wind chronograph with a column wheel. Gear layout and subdial positions differ from the L951.1.
- Asian 7750 or 7753: automatic, thicker, with a different pusher feel.
- Quartz: found in low-cost copies. No mechanical parts and no caseback worth opening.
Some replicas add a stamped plate shaped like a balance cock and a column wheel. The plate hides the real movement. Engraving on these plates is stamped. Genuine Lange engraving is cut by hand.
Tells on a Fake Datograph
- Thickness. Genuine Datograph cases measure about 13 mm. Copies often run 14 mm to 16 mm.
- Date. The genuine outsize date uses two separate discs driven by a Lange mechanism. Many fakes use one disc, or a printed wheel with the wrong font.
- Weight. Platinum is dense. A platinum Datograph is much heavier than a steel copy. Replicas sold as platinum are steel.
- Subdials. Diameter, spacing, and hand length differ from the genuine dial.
- Caseback. Genuine movements show Glashütte ribbing on a German silver three-quarter plate, screwed gold chatons, and a hand-engraved balance cock. Replicas show plated brass or a printed plate.
- Markings. The Made in Germany stamp, the reference number, and the case number sit in specific places. Copies place them at random.
Price Gap
A replica Datograph costs $80 to $700. A genuine 403.035 in platinum sells for $60,000 to $90,000 on the secondary market. Rose gold and white gold versions sit lower. The parts count tells the story. A $200 watch has no gold chatons and no hand-cut bevels.
Legal Status in the United States
18 U.S.C. § 2320 makes trafficking in counterfeit goods a federal crime. A first offense carries up to 10 years in prison and a $2 million fine for an individual. Replica factories do not publish production numbers. No seller confirms the movement inside a case. Serial numbers on fakes are invented. Batch quality changes without notice, so a review from 2022 does not describe a watch sold in 2025.
