The Short Answer

On a 2024 Seamaster, the hippocampus is the fastest tell on the whole watch. Work in this order: relief depth, edge crispness, then letterforms. Genuine Omega caseback medallions sit proud of the surface with a hard shadow line under raking light. Most replicas built this year still read flat, and the shadow under the seahorse is soft or absent.

What the Hippocampus Is

The hippocampus is the seahorse emblem stamped into the back of Omega Seamaster cases. Omega has used it on the dive line for decades, and it appears on the caseback rather than the dial. That placement matters for buyers, because the caseback is the one surface a seller cannot easily photograph around. A dial can be swapped. A caseback stamp is part of the case itself.

Why 2024 Changed the Game

For years the easy advice was simple: run a fingernail across the seahorse, and if you feel the relief, it is probably genuine. That advice is now outdated. During 2023 and into 2024, several replica factories shifted from shallow laser etching to die struck inserts and milled casebacks. Some of them do produce real relief. What they have not solved is the fine detail at the edges of that relief.

So the check moved. Depth alone no longer separates the two. You now have to look at how the metal behaves at the boundary of the stamp.

Five Things I Check, In Order

1. Relief height under raking light

Tilt the case so a lamp throws light across it at a low angle. A genuine hippocampus throws a defined dark edge along the tail and the crown area. A shallow stamp disappears at that angle, which is the point: flat details vanish when light is not coming straight down.

2. Fin and snout detail

The seahorse has a curled tail, a dorsal fin, and a narrow snout. That snout is the hardest part to reproduce. On real stamps it tapers to a clean point. On fakes it either blunts off or gets wider than it should, because the tooling cannot hold that thin a line at depth.

3. The ring text

Around the emblem sits a ring of text and reference markings. Check the spacing between letters and the height of the numerals. Replica stamping tends to crowd characters together near the curve, where the die has to bend. Look at the widest part of the arc and the tightest part. If the gap changes by more than a hair, note it.

4. Surface finish around the medallion

The area just outside the ring should hold the same brushed or polished grain as the rest of the caseback. Replica cases often show a faint tool circle or a change in grain direction where the insert was pressed in. Catch it by rotating the case slowly under a light.

5. Threads and how the caseback seats

Screw the back down and feel the last quarter turn. Genuine threads engage smoothly and stop clean. Fakes often feel gritty or stop a fraction early, because the case was machined to fit an insert rather than the other way around.

Photographing It Before You Commit

Ask for three shots: straight on, raking light from the left, raking light from the right. Straight on hides depth. The two raking shots expose it. If a seller sends only a flat, evenly lit photo, that is information in itself. Add a close crop of the snout and one of the ring text at the widest point of the arc.

What Still Gives a Fake Away

  • Soft shadow under the tail when light hits at a low angle
  • A snout that is blunt, short, or too thick
  • Letter spacing in the ring that tightens or spreads at the curve
  • A visible tool circle or grain break around the medallion
  • Threads that feel gritty or stop short of flush

None of these are absolute on their own. Two or three together, on the same caseback, is where I stop looking.
