Short answer
IW93857 is not a reference number in IWC Schaffhausen's catalog. IWC references read IW plus six digits, for example IW371617 and IW500704. Five digits after IW does not match that pattern. A watch sold as an "IW93857" is mislabeled or counterfeit.
How IWC reference numbers work
The prefix IW stands for International Watch Co. The digits that follow identify the collection, the case material, the dial, and the strap. IWC prints these numbers in its catalogs, on its website, and on the certificate that ships with each watch. A search of the IWC site returns no result for IW93857.
Sellers shorten numbers. IW3714 can mean IW371401 or IW371446. Shortening is not the same as inventing. IW93857 does not extend to a full number.
Checks on the case
- Caseback engraving. Genuine IWC stamps are cut into the metal, not printed. Edges are sharp. The font matches the catalog page.
- Two numbers. The reference and the serial appear on the caseback. The serial runs 6 to 8 digits and does not repeat the reference.
- Dimensions. Measure with calipers. Counterfeit cases run 0.5 mm to 1 mm off spec.
- Crystal. IWC fits sapphire with an anti-reflective coating on both faces. A single-sided coating shows a blue or purple tint at an angle.
- Weight. A steel IWC chronograph on a bracelet sits near 150 g to 190 g. Fakes often come in under 120 g.
Checks on the movement
Open the caseback, or pay a watchmaker to do it. IWC uses in-house calibers and modified ETA and Sellita bases. Rotor engraving is deep and even. Bridges carry straight stripes. Screws are polished. A rough finish, printed rotor text, or a plastic movement holder points to a fake.
Ask for a timegrapher reading. Counterfeit movements drift more than 15 seconds per day in many cases. Genuine IWC calibers hold tighter rates.
Papers and serials
IWC does not publish a public serial number lookup for buyers. Verification runs through an IWC boutique or a service center. Bring the watch and the papers. The service center checks the case number against its records.
As of publication, IWC lists no free online authenticity tool.
Price checks
A new IWC chronograph lists between about 6,000 USD and 12,000 USD. A "new" listing under 1,500 USD is not a genuine IWC. Used steel models hold value above 3,000 USD in most cases.
Legal note
Counterfeit watches are illegal to import and sell in the United States. CBP seizes and destroys them. Switzerland grants IWC trademark protection, and Swiss customs can hold shipments at the border.
What to do next
- Search the exact reference on the IWC website.
- Measure the case and weigh the watch.
- Photograph the caseback and the movement.
- Send the photos to an IWC service center for a written opinion.
- Keep the invoice if you already paid. It supports a chargeback or a customs report.
