A reference number does not prove a Jaeger-LeCoultre watch is genuine. The string 1578420 as written in most listings is incomplete. Jaeger-LeCoultre prints references with a Q prefix plus six or seven digits, so a caseback reads Q1558420 or Q1578420. Listings that drop the Q, mix letter case, or show the number in a font that differs from the rest of the engraving need a closer look.

Two checks settle most cases: the caseback engraving and the movement stamp. Both should match the factory record for that serial. A Jaeger-LeCoultre boutique or service center can run the comparison.

Reference format

• Q prefix, then six or seven digits. Examples: Q1548420, Q1558420.
• The reference names the model and the case metal. It is not unique to one watch.
• The serial names the individual watch. Serial sits next to or below the reference on the caseback.

Caseback and case

Factory engraving is cut into the metal. Letters have even depth, sharp inner corners and no raised burr. Replica engraving looks shallow and gray under a 10x loupe. Check the crown: the logo is stamped so the vertical stroke of the J sits on the case axis. Check the lugs. Polished and brushed surfaces meet on a crisp line, not a rounded edge. Check the crystal. Sapphire has no mold seam and shows no rainbow sheen at the rim. The caseback should seat flush with no gap over the gasket.

Movement

Master Control references carry the 1000 Hours Control mark, a test Jaeger-LeCoultre has run since 1992. The caliber number is engraved on the movement bridge, not printed. Automatic calibers 899 and 751 beat at 4 Hz, or 28,800 vibrations per hour. Many replica movements run at 3 Hz (21,600 vph). Look at the finishing: Geneva stripes run straight, perlage circles overlap, screws are blued or polished with a centered slot. Off-center screw slots point away from the factory.

Papers, box and price

Box, warranty card and hang tag carry the same reference and serial as the case. Numbers in a different typeface than the case do not match. A price far under the market for the same reference is a signal. Ask for the service history. Jaeger-LeCoultre can confirm a service record against the serial.

What the number does not tell you

One reference number does not list dial color, bracelet or production year. Ask the seller for the caliber number and the full serial, then verify both with a Jaeger-LeCoultre boutique or service center before any payment.
