Short answer
Omega does not sell a watch called the Master Chronometer 450. Omega model names use depth ratings: Aqua Terra 150M, Seamaster Diver 300M, Planet Ocean 600M. Master Chronometer is a certification from METAS, not a model line. In replica listings, 450 maps to a price band in US dollars or to a factory batch code. Ask the seller which one applies. A listing that prints 450 as a model name is using shorthand.
What Master Chronometer means on a genuine Omega
METAS, the Swiss Federal Institute of Metrology, certifies the finished watch, not a loose movement. Omega sends complete watches. The test runs 10 days and covers 8 criteria:
- Daily rate between 0 and +5 seconds per day.
- Rate measured in 6 positions.
- Rate measured at 2 temperatures.
- Rate after exposure to a 15,000 gauss magnetic field.
- Isochronism between day 1 and the last day.
- Water resistance at the rated depth.
- Power reserve at full wind.
- Function of the movement, which must hold COSC chronometer certification first.
What a replica contains
Replica casebacks carry engraved text. Engraving is not certification. High-tier replicas use Chinese automatic movements. Common bases are the Seagull ST2130, the Hangzhou 6-series, and the ETA 2824 clone, fitted with decorative plates and an engraved rotor shaped like Omega caliber 8800 or 8900. Out-of-box rate on those movements runs from -10 to +20 seconds per day. Magnetic resistance comes from case materials and a soft iron cage or a silicon hairspring. Dial print does not change it. No replica is submitted to METAS.
Omega ships a Master Chronometer card with a certification number that can be checked. Replica cards are printed. They carry no number tied to a METAS test record.
Checks before buying
- Case size: a genuine Planet Ocean 600M on caliber 8900 is 43.5 mm wide and 16.04 mm thick. Early replicas added 1 mm to 2 mm of thickness.
- Movement: ask for the base caliber, not the advertising name.
- Crystal: genuine uses sapphire with anti-reflective coating on both faces. Many replicas coat the outside only.
- Bezel insert: ceramic with enamel or Liquidmetal fill. Copies use printed or painted fill that fades.
- Date wheel: check position, font, and alignment.
- Water resistance: a genuine Planet Ocean is tested to 600 m. Replicas are not pressure tested. Do not swim with one.
- Bracelet: check taper, end link fit, and clasp engraving depth.
Price tiers
The replica market splits into three bands. Entry sits at $150 to $250 and uses lower-grade movements with mineral glass or single-coated glass. Mid sits at $300 to $450 and uses sapphire, ceramic inserts, and a clone movement. High sits at $500 to $700 and adds better case finishing and closer dial printing. A listing with 450 in the title points at the top of the mid band or at a price inside that range.
Legal status in the US
Import and sale of counterfeit watches are illegal in the United States. 18 U.S.C. 2320 covers trafficking in counterfeit goods and carries prison terms. 19 U.S.C. 1526 lets US Customs and Border Protection seize and destroy counterfeit merchandise. Personal-use buyers face seizure of the shipment. Resellers face criminal exposure.
What cannot be confirmed
Factory names change. Sellers rename batches. No public database maps a listing to a factory or to a movement batch. A description alone cannot verify a specific watch.
