A fake Rolex Milgauss is a watch built to look like the Rolex Milgauss. Rolex does not make it. Reported asking prices run from about $30 for a quartz model to $1,000 and up for a so-called super clone. No replica uses a Rolex Caliber 3131. Selling one in the United States is a federal crime.

The genuine Milgauss in numbers

Rolex launched the Milgauss in 1956. The name joins "mille," French for 1,000, with "gauss," the unit of magnetic flux density. The watch resists magnetic fields to 1,000 gauss. A soft iron cage inside the case, a Faraday cage, routes magnetic fields around the movement and away from the escapement.

Three references define the line:

  • 6541, 1956. First Milgauss. Rotating bezel. Auction results for clean examples pass $50,000.
  • 1019, 1960 to 1988. Steel case, 38 mm, fixed bezel, no date. The longest run of the model.
  • 116400 and 116400GV, 2007 to 2023. 40 mm case, about 13 mm thick, 100 m water resistance, Caliber 3131. The GV carries a green sapphire crystal. Rolex ended Milgauss production in 2023.

Replica specs against real specs

  • Movement. Caliber 3131 has a blue Parachrom hairspring and a niobium-zirconium escapement. Replicas use Asian automatic or quartz movements with no antimagnetic parts.
  • Shielding. A Faraday cage needs a specific iron alloy and wall thickness. Replica sellers do not publish gauss test data.
  • Crystal. Green sapphire on the 116400GV shows a green rim from the side. The dial stays black. Tinted glass on a replica turns the whole dial green.
  • Finish. Bracelet end links, crown threads, and dial printing differ under magnification.
  • Numbers. Replica case numbers repeat across units. A single number can appear on more than one watch.

Law and customs

18 U.S.C. § 2320 covers trafficking in counterfeit goods. A first offense by an individual carries up to 10 years in prison and a $2 million fine. A company faces up to $5 million. Trademark owners can sue under the Lanham Act, 15 U.S.C. § 1114, for damages and profits. U.S. Customs and Border Protection seizes counterfeit watches at ports of entry. Seized shipments are destroyed, and the buyer has no refund path.

Service and resale

Rolex service centers refuse counterfeit watches. Independent watchmakers can swap a movement but cannot order Rolex parts for a fake case or dial. Online marketplaces pull replica listings, so resale value sits near zero.

Checks before buying a Milgauss

  1. Reference and serial. Compare the case number with the warranty card and the reference number.
  2. Crystal edge. View the 116400GV from the side. A green dial means tinted glass, not sapphire.
  3. Magnetism. A gaussmeter is the only proof of 1,000 gauss resistance. A photo is not proof.
  4. Authentication. A watchmaker with a Rolex parts account can open the case and identify the movement.

Rolex does not publish Milgauss production totals, so unit counts for any reference are estimates.
