Short answer
A fake Rolex Sky-Dweller is a copy of the 42 mm annual-calendar watch Rolex launched in 2012. Replica prices run from about $80 to about $700. The budget tier uses quartz or a 21-jewel 2813 movement. The top tier uses a decorated clone of the Rolex calibre 9001 or 9002. No replica on the market reproduces the Ring Command bezel or the Saros annual calendar in full. Buyers get the look: 42 mm case, fluted bezel, 12 month apertures, off-center 24-hour disc, date at 3 o'clock.
What the genuine Sky-Dweller does
Rolex built the Sky-Dweller for travelers. Two functions set it apart from the Datejust and the GMT-Master II.
- The Saros annual calendar shows the month as a red rectangle in one of 12 apertures at the dial edge. A disc under the dial moves the marker.
- The second time zone reads on an off-center 24-hour disc. A fixed red triangle at 12 o'clock points to the hour.
- The date sits at 3 o'clock. The watch needs one correction per year, at the end of February.
- The Ring Command bezel turns through three positions. One position winds the movement. One sets the second time zone and the month. One sets local time and the date.
Calibre 9001 ran from 2012. The 2023 generation uses calibre 9002 and adds a Jubilee bracelet option. Case size is 42 mm. Water resistance is 100 m. Reference 326934, a steel case with a white gold bezel, arrived in 2017 and sold above retail on the secondary market for years. The 2023 successor is reference 336934.
Replica price tiers
- Budget, $80 to $150. Quartz or 21-jewel 2813 movement. Printed month apertures. Static 24-hour disc. Folded-link bracelet.
- Mid, $200 to $350. 2824 or 2836 base movement. Working date. A 24-hour disc tied to the hour hand. Bezel turns but does not connect to the movement.
- Top, $400 to $700. Clone 9001 or 9002 with decorative plates. Correct dial layout, sapphire crystal with cyclops, solid-link bracelet.
Where replicas fail
- Ring Command bezel. On the real watch the bezel stops in three detents and drives a lever inside the case. Replica bezels spin free or sit under a gasket.
- Month apertures. Most replicas print the 12 windows and leave one month fixed. Some show two months at once.
- Fourth hand. The genuine Sky-Dweller has no GMT hand. A replica with a fourth hand copies a different layout.
- Case height. The 42 mm genuine case is about 14 mm thick. Thin replicas measure 12 mm to 13 mm.
- Cyclops and date. Replica cyclops magnify at the wrong power. Date fonts run wide and sit off center.
- Bezel color. White gold on the 326934 and 336934 has a tone that plated brass and steel do not match.
Three checks that settle it
Count the bezel detents. Turn the bezel to the second position and watch the month disc move. Set local time forward past midnight and see if the 24-hour disc advances in 24-hour steps. A replica fails at least one of the three. Most fail all three.
Legal status in the United States
Counterfeit watches are illegal to import and sell. Trafficking in counterfeit goods carries federal penalties under 18 U.S.C. 2320. US Customs and Border Protection seizes shipments. Resale of a counterfeit as genuine is trademark infringement. Rolex service centers do not service counterfeits.
Cost of ownership
A top-tier replica costs about $600. A genuine steel and white gold Sky-Dweller retails for five figures, and a full service at a Rolex center runs about $700 to $1,000. The gap between the two is the movement: 380 parts, an annual calendar disc, and a bezel that talks to the gear train.
