Short answer
If a Speedmaster Professional with a calibre 1861 is fake, the giveaway is almost always the movement, not the dial. The cal. 1861 is a hand-wound, 18-jewel chronograph with no rotor, and its bridges sit in a very specific layout. Most copies either hide an automatic or a cheap hand-wound chronograph behind a display back, or fake the engraving on a solid back and hope nobody opens it. Dial, bezel and caseback are secondary checks you do after the movement.
What the real calibre 1861 actually is
The 1861 is Omega's rhodium-plated evolution of the calibre 861, which replaced the column-wheel 321 back in 1968. The architecture comes from the Lemania 1873. It beats at 21,600 vibrations per hour, has 18 jewels, and gives roughly 48 hours of power reserve. It is a cam-actuated chronograph with a lateral clutch, not a column wheel, which is why the pusher feel is firm and mechanical rather than silky. Rhodium plating gives it a bright, slightly grey finish, where the older 861 looked warmer and darker.
Production ran from the mid-1990s into 2021, when the METAS-certified calibre 3861 took over. That date matters. If someone is selling you a 1861 Moonwatch dated 2022 or later, the story is already broken.

Movement checks that settle it fast
- Wind it with the caseback off. There should be no rotor at all. Any automatic movement under a Moonwatch caseback is an instant rejection.
- Study the chronograph bridges. The 1861 has a wide flat bridge over the chronograph works with a distinctive screw pattern. Copies typically use a Seagull ST19 or a 7750 derivative with completely different bridge shapes.
- Read the engraving. Genuine plates carry the Omega symbol, "1861" and a serial struck cleanly into the metal. Fakes show shallow, laser-looking text, and the serial rarely matches the caseback.
- Check subdial layout and hand height. On a real Moonwatch, running seconds sit at 9, the 30-minute counter at 3, the 12-hour at 6. Copies often use the wrong hand lengths, or subdial hands that float too high over a flat dial.
- Work the pushers. A cam-actuated 1861 starts and stops with a hard mechanical snap. Mushy or nearly silent pushers mean a different movement inside.
Case, dial and bezel tells
Twisted lugs with crisp chamfers are expensive to machine, and on copies they usually look soft and rounded. The hesalite crystal should carry the etched Omega symbol dead center; most fakes use sapphire or plain acrylic without it. On the bezel, the dot beside 90 should sit diagonally, not directly above the numeral. The "dot over 90" arrangement belongs to far earlier references and turns up constantly on watches sold as 3570.50s. Lume should be a flat off-white; copies often glow blue-green or look painted on. Caseback engraving on the genuine watch is deep and sharp, with the NASA flight-qualification text properly spaced.
Why a copy costs more than it looks
No Omega service center will touch a counterfeit, and the movement inside usually cannot be repaired with genuine parts. A real cal. 1861 service runs into the hundreds of dollars; a fake with a broken ST19 is often scrap metal. Water resistance claims on copies are marketing copy, not test data. If you are buying used, ask for movement photos with the caseback off, a serial that matches the case, and a service history. No photos, no deal.
