A fake Speedmaster Cal 863 is a replica Moonwatch that claims to run Omega's rhodium-plated manual-wind chronograph from the late 1980s and 1990s. Almost none of them do. - Hangzhou and generic Chinese chronographs: similar layout, rougher finishing, and stamped parts.
- Decorated quartz or mecha-quartz: common in low-tier listings, with faux subdials or a sweeping seconds hand.
- Refinished Miyota or ETA clones: uncommon in a Speedmaster case, but they turn up in hybrid builds.
How to Spot a Fake Cal 863 Speedmaster
- Check the plating color. A real 863 is rhodium plated and reads silver-grey. Yellow or copper tones point to a different movement.
- Look for a column wheel. The 863 uses cams and levers. A visible column wheel under the bridge means the movement is not an 863.
- Read the engraving. Genuine caliber marks are crisp and correctly spaced. Replicas show shallow laser etching with wrong fonts.
- Inspect screws and bridges. Real parts are polished and beveled. Fakes show tool marks, mismatched screw heads, and uneven perlage.
