A. Lange and Söhne made the Zeitwerk Date in 2019. No major replica factory makes a working copy of it. Listings sold as a "fake Zeitwerk Date" fall into three groups: quartz watches with a date window, hand-wound watches built on an unrelated movement, and scams that ship nothing.
What the genuine watch does
Lange launched the Zeitwerk in 2009. It shows hours and minutes as printed numerals in two windows. Both numerals jump once per minute. The Zeitwerk Date added a date ring in January 2019 at the SIHH fair in Geneva.
The date ring sits at the edge of the dial. It is a glass ring printed with the numerals 1 to 31. A red marker marks the current date. At midnight the ring advances one step. Case diameter is 44.2 mm. The launch reference is 148.038 in white gold. The movement is the hand-wound calibre L043.8.
Why copies are rare
Replica output follows volume. Factories in Guangzhou copy Rolex, Omega, Panerai and Audemars Piguet because those brands sell hundreds of thousands of watches per year. Lange builds a few thousand watches per year across its whole catalogue. The pool of buyers for a Lange copy is small.
The jumping numerals cost money to copy. A replica maker needs three numeral discs, a snap mechanism and a gear train that releases once per minute. A date ring adds a second jumping system. Few factories will tool that for a model with low demand.
Result: pages for "fake Zeitwerk Date" show stock photos, no movement photos, and payment by bank transfer or crypto.
Checks you can run
- Date display. Genuine: numerals in a ring around the dial edge. Fake: a window at 3 or 6 o'clock, or a small date subdial.
- Jump. Watch the minute window for two minutes. Genuine numerals snap in one step. A sliding or sweeping minute display is not the Lange mechanism.
- Size. Measure the case. Genuine is 44.2 mm across, crown excluded.
- Thickness and weight. Ask for the case thickness and a scale photo. Sellers of fakes skip both.
- Movement photos. Genuine has an engraved balance cock, screwed gold chatons and Glashütte ribbing on the plate. No movement photo means stop.
- Price. The 148.038 trades at six figures in USD on the secondary market. An offer in the hundreds or low thousands is not a Lange.
Records and service
Lange keeps service records by case number. A watch sent to Glashütte for service returns with paperwork. Ask for the case number, then ask Lange or a Lange-certified watchmaker to confirm it. Auction houses such as Phillips, Christie's and Sotheby's verify lots before sale.

A real Zeitwerk Date has not been copied to a usable standard. Treat every "fake Zeitwerk Date" listing as a mislabelled watch or a scam until the seller proves the dial, the jump, the case size and the movement.
