Steps to verify a Moonwatch

  1. Write down the reference number stamped on the caseback and the serial number engraved on the movement bridge.
  2. Submit those numbers to Omega for an Extract of the Archives, or ask a Swatch Group service center to confirm them.
  3. Confirm the case diameter against the manufacturer spec for that reference. A Moonwatch Professional is 42mm across, and a watch that measures short or tall on a caliper is a warning sign.
  4. Examine the dial layout. A Moonwatch chronograph has three subdials at 3, 6, and 9 o'clock, with running seconds at 9, a 30 minute counter at 3, and a 12 hour counter at 6. On a fake, these are frequently swapped or unevenly spaced.
  5. Read the dial printing with a loupe. The word PROFESSIONAL sits under 12. Lettering on a fake tends to be thick, uneven, or applied as one block instead of individual crisp strokes.
  6. Inspect the bezel insert. Older references use an aluminum insert with a dot over 90 on the tachymeter scale. Current references use ceramic. A printed or misaligned scale points to a copy.
  7. Check the hands and lume. Omega hands are finished on all sides. Look for rough edges, glue, or lume that sits off center.

What replica listings actually sell

Watches marketed as a replica Speedmaster Moonwatch are counterfeit goods. They carry no manufacturer warranty, no service support, and no parts availability. US Customs and Border Protection can seize them at import, and no watchmaker at a Swatch Group service center will touch them. They also cannot be resold as genuine, and offering one for sale as a real Omega is a federal offense.
