Short answer
A replica Cartier Rotonde "4046" is not one watch. Cartier uses four digit numbers for both case references and movement calibers, and no public Cartier catalog lists a Rotonde 4046 in plain terms. Sellers apply the number to several Rotonde variants. Ask for photos of the caseback and the movement before you compare prices. Two replicas sold under the same number can differ in case size, movement, and dial layout.
What the genuine line looks like
The Rotonde de Cartier is a round dress watch with a thin bezel, a fluted crown set with a blue spinel cabochon, and a silver or guilloche dial with Roman numerals. Case sizes run from 40 mm to 42 mm on most models. Cases come in steel, rose gold, and white gold. Crystals are sapphire. Water resistance is 30 m on the dress models.
Movements
Cartier fits in-house calibers to the Rotonde line. The chronograph uses the 1904-CH MC, an automatic column-wheel movement. The time-only models use the 1904 MC or the 430 MC in manual wind form. Replica makers do not copy these movements. Most replicas use one of three builds:
- Asian 7750 automatic chronograph, 28,800 vph
- Seagull ST19 manual wind chronograph, 21,600 vph
- Quartz or Miyota automatic on low cost time-only builds
Check subdial spacing. A 7750 based chronograph puts running seconds at 9 o'clock. A watch with seconds at 6 and a 7750 inside has a transfer gear, and the extra parts add failure points.
Inspection checklist
- Caseback engraving. Genuine text is deep and sharp. Laser etching looks shallow under a loupe.
- Crown cabochon. Blue spinel on the genuine watch. Plastic or glass on low grade replicas. Check color in daylight.
- Dial print. Roman numerals sit close to the chapter ring with no gaps. Look for thick paint and misaligned indices at 12.
- Crystal. Sapphire rings when tapped. Mineral glass sounds flat. Check for anti-reflective coating on the inside face only.
- Hands. Cartier uses blued steel on some references. Replica hands are painted blue over brass.
- Weight. A steel Rotonde case with a strap weighs about 70 g to 90 g. A light case points to a hollowed build.
Price bands
Quartz time-only replicas sell for USD 60 to 120. Automatic time-only builds run USD 150 to 300. Chronographs with a 7750 or ST19 run USD 300 to 600. Prices above that range rest on marketing, not on parts.
Legal status in the US
Counterfeit watches that carry the Cartier name or the panther mark infringe a registered trademark. U.S. Customs and Border Protection can seize shipments at the border. Trafficking in counterfeit goods is a federal crime under 18 U.S.C. § 2320, and penalties rise on repeat offenses. Cartier will not service a replica, and resale inside the U.S. carries legal risk for the seller.
