Answer first
A replica IWC IW329012 is a copy of a watch from the IWC Portugieser line. The reference string does not appear in the current IWC online catalog, so confirm the base model with the seller before you compare prices. Sellers in the US quote $250 to $900 for this class of watch. Price follows the movement, not the reference number.
What the number points to
IWC uses IW plus six digits. The 3290 block sits in the Portugieser chronograph family. A Portugieser chronograph has two sub-dials stacked at 12 and 6, a case near 41 mm, a smooth bezel, and leaf hands. A listing with three sub-dials, a date window at 3, or a 38 mm case does not match that block. Ask for a photo of the caseback. The engraving should show the reference, the case material, and a serial number.
If the seller cannot produce that photo, the number is decoration.
Three movement tiers
- Tier 1, quartz or mecha-quartz, $250 to $400. The chronograph hand sweeps in steps. The sub-dial at 6 often runs as a 24-hour indicator, not a running seconds hand.
- Tier 2, clone 7750, $400 to $650. Automatic, 28,800 vibrations per hour, about 44 hours of power reserve. Pusher feel is firm. Rotor noise is audible.
- Tier 3, decorated clone, $650 to $900. Column-wheel style bridges, blued screws, better finishing under a glass caseback.
Water resistance is a separate question. ISO 22810 sets the test classes. Most replicas in this price range fail a 50 m pressure test. Do not swim with one.
Dial and case checks
- Index alignment: the 12 marker should sit on the vertical centerline of the crown.
- Print: the IWC name and Schaffhausen line should stay crisp under 10x magnification. Soft edges mean pad printing, not applied plates.
- Sub-dial spacing: the gap above and below the two sub-dials should match.
- Hands: leaf hands need flat, polished flanks. Bent tips show under raking light.
- Caseback: laser engraving is shallow and gray. A deep cut with bright edges is a better sign.
- Crown: threads should engage in under one turn and stop clean.
- Lug width: measure it. A 20 mm strap on a 21 mm lug gap leaves a visible step.
Steps before payment
- Ask for a timestamped photo set: dial, caseback, crown, clasp, movement.
- Ask for the movement name and beat rate. Swiss movement alone is not an answer.
- Ask for a short video with the chronograph started, stopped, and reset. The reset should snap to zero.
- Confirm the returns window in writing. Seven days is common. Zero days is a red flag.
- Pay with a method that carries chargeback rights. Bank transfer carries none.
- Get the tracking number before the parcel leaves the shipper.
Legal position in the US
Sale of goods that carry a counterfeit trademark is illegal in the US. US Customs and Border Protection can seize imported shipments that infringe a trademark. A replica carries no IWC warranty and no service history. Resale value is near zero.
