Short answer
A replica Patek Philippe 5711 sold as a "limited edition" is an unauthorized copy of the Nautilus. The seller holds no license from Patek Philippe and no production agreement with the brand. The phrase describes the seller's stock, not a numbered release from Geneva. Selling these watches in the United States violates federal trademark law.
What Patek Philippe made
Patek Philippe introduced the Nautilus in 1976. The reference 3700 was the first model. Gerald Genta drew the case.
The reference 5711/1A-010 arrived in 2006. It used a steel case, a blue dial, and a steel bracelet. Patek Philippe discontinued it in 2021.
Three 5711 versions have a documented production limit:
- 5711/1P-001. Platinum case, blue dial. 40 pieces. Released in 2016 for the 40th anniversary of the Nautilus.
- 5711/1A-014. Steel case, olive green dial. Announced in April 2021 as the final regular production 5711. The line ended at the close of 2021.
- 5711/1A-018. Steel case, Tiffany Blue dial. 170 pieces. Released in December 2021 and sold through Tiffany & Co. stores in New York, Beverly Hills, and San Francisco.
What the replica claim covers
Replica sellers use "limited edition" for three things:
- Batch size from a factory. A run of 50 or 100 units. That number has no tie to Patek Philippe.
- Dial colors the brand never sold. Green, red, and black dials appear on replica listings inside a 5711 case.
- Marketing terms. "Swiss movement," "1:1," and "mirror quality" carry no standard and no inspection body.
No replica watch carries a Patek Philippe serial number that the brand registers. Patek Philippe service centers refuse to work on counterfeit watches.
Legal status in the US
- 15 U.S.C. 1114 and 15 U.S.C. 1125 (Lanham Act). Selling goods with a counterfeit mark creates civil liability.
- 18 U.S.C. 2320. A first offense carries up to 10 years in prison and a $2 million fine for an individual.
- 19 U.S.C. 1526. Import of goods bearing a counterfeit mark is prohibited. US Customs and Border Protection seizes shipments.
Price gap
The 5711/1A-010 retailed for about $34,900 at discontinuation. The Tiffany 5711/1A-018 retailed for about $52,635. One example sold at Phillips in New York in December 2021 for $6.5 million.
Replica listings run from a few hundred dollars to a few thousand. The gap is one signal.
What to check on any 5711
- Reference number and case metal. Steel, platinum, and rose gold take different references.
- Movement. The sapphire case back shows the calibre and the finishing.
- Serial and movement numbers. Patek Philippe engraves both.
- Papers. The brand issues a Certificate of Origin with each watch.
Patek Philippe runs no public serial lookup. A service center can confirm a watch during service.
