A 43 mm bronze pilot watch is a large cockpit-style watch with a copper alloy case that darkens with wear. Case Size and Fit
43 mm is the case diameter, measured across the case without the crown. Three numbers decide fit:

- Crown: 7 to 8 mm onion or diamond shape.
A 50 mm lug-to-lug span sits flat on a wrist of 6.75 in or more. Below 6.5 in the lugs overhang. Pilot lugs are straight, so the case does not hug the wrist.
Bronze Alloy and Patina
Two alloys show up. CuSn8 holds 92 percent copper and 8 percent tin. Aluminum bronze holds 90 percent copper, 8 to 10 percent aluminum, plus small amounts of iron and nickel. Both sit below 316L steel on the Vickers scale, so scratches show.
Fresh bronze is pink-gold. Copper oxide forms in the first week and turns the metal brown. Copper carbonate forms after that, and the surface goes green-black. Humidity, sweat, and salt water speed the change. Two to eight weeks is a normal range.
Lemon juice, vinegar, or a cloth with mild abrasive strips the patina. It returns. Bronze leaves a green mark on skin. The salt is copper carbonate and washes off with soap.
Most bronze cases carry a titanium or 316L steel back. The back touches skin for hours, and bronze there causes staining.
Dial, Crystal, and Lume
Pilot dials use matte black or blue, white or cream numerals, and a triangle at 12. Hands are sword, syringe, or baton. Sapphire is the norm. Domed sapphire with coating on the inner face cuts glare and keeps the coat free of scratches.
Lume is C3 (green) or BGW9 (blue). Applied lume runs 0.1 to 0.2 mm thick on good dials. Thin lume glows for 20 minutes. Good lume runs 4 to 8 hours.
